The stronger the base the greater the stability
THE STRONGER THE BASE THE GREATER
THE STABILITY
Cl. Mario D’Couto sdb
As
time is going on, we are constantly bombarded with new trends and different
value systems. All of us want to be happy and are looking out for that
happiness but where we look for it is what matters. We live in an ‘instant’ culture where things are
supposed to move quickly and this trend has fortunately or unfortunately had
its impact on society. What is more is that this kind of system has made our
value system also a bit topsy – turvy. Relativism and postmodernism may sound
like big philosophical words but it is something that is very prevalent in
today’s society. In the midst of this confusion, it is important to live by
one’s convictions. But how to live by these convictions? It is by developing a
good value system. There is every possibility that one could live by a false
conviction. Hence it is important to develop the right kind of values.
It
is said that our conscience is the voice of God as God speaks through it. Yet,
one question that we could ask ourselves is, “Is not society in some way responsible for our conscience?” For
instance, if a child grew up in a society or in an environment where stealing
or polygamy was alright, it would not matter to him or her if he or she did it
in the future. Although there could be exceptions to this, as it is in the case
for every rule, it is most likely to be this way for we learn by seeing and
experiencing. Hence, it is very important that people, especially young people
who are about to face life and make important choices or even otherwise, to be
guided at all times. Just as in a building if the foundation is strong, then
the whole structure will be strong, so too is it the same with life.
As
it is said, “Learning young is learned for
life,” when children learn the right values at a young age, they will
eventually turn out to be not just good and honest citizens but also
contributors to society.
