The Facticity of Human Life: A Positive Phenomenon
THE FACTICITY OF HUMAN LIFE: A
POSITIVE PHENOMENON
Cl. Mario D’Couto SDB
Some people grumble over the fact
that they are the so called “good for
nothing.” They feel that they have nothing to live for or that life is just
not worth living. Have you ever come across a person who said, “How I wish I was like him!” or “How I wish had a good voice like her!”
or “How I wish was a good soccer player
like Cristiano Ronaldo or Leo Messi!”
Many people, surprisingly, do think
that way. There are 2 ways of responding to this problem. One way is to remind
ourselves that none of us is a ‘piece of
junk’ because God did not create junk. Whatever He has created is good. There
is something inside each one of us that is waiting to be discovered. It is just
a matter of persistence, effort, knowledge and most of all, patience. Having
mentioned that, this brings me to the other way of responding to this
situation. While it is true that all of us are limited, it gives us a chance to
be humble or to practice the virtue of humility. Imagine for a moment if you
were to be fully equipped with all kinds of talents or that you were so
self-sufficient that you would not need another person’s help, how would that
be? It would certainly make us egoistic and self-centred, for as it is rightly
said, “Pride is the mother of all vices.”
I think that we should be thankful to God for our limitations and weaknesses,
not so much to be content with mediocrity but rather to not be swell-headed
that ‘I’, ‘Myself’ should be the centre of attraction in whatever I do or
wherever I may be. Let us therefore, as we journey through life support one
another to become the person that God wants you and me to be.
