Time - A Reflection
TIME – A REFLECTION
Cl. Mario D’Couto SDB
It is often said that time and tide
waits for none. Time is an everyday phenomenon which we all experience. The
life that we live in today is a fast- paced life. At times we may even not have
the time to breathe. But that’s life!
The need for time is felt even more today because it
seems that there is so much to be done and yet so little time. If I were to ask
you, “From when did time begin?” it
would probably be difficult to answer and that is because in order to answer
that question we would first have to define time? Many people refer to time
only in terms of seconds, minutes and hours. That is, however, a far narrow
understanding. Time is very much a deeper, wider and a broader concept and for
that I think we need to respect it.
It is said that time began with creation because before
that it was just not possible to think of time. Even in the realm of science,
it becomes more meaningful to talk about it only after creation. Why do you
think some people use the phrase, “the
end of time?” Perhaps, the end of time signifies the end of the world.
After that what will happen is uncertain.
Thus, time is indeed precious. We cannot create nor can
we destroy it. It just comes and goes without one’s will and what one does with
it is in one’s hands. There are times when we regret over those circumstances
where we could have done better. Feeling a certain amount of remorse about such
things is valid. But to feel bad about it all the time is not going to help. It
is harmful. Thus, just as the popular phrase goes, “Don’t cry over spilt milk”, there is nothing we can do about those
negative circumstances that have already happened. But what we can do depends
largely on the “time that we have now.”
Finally, I think we need to value time because, time
represents the “breathe of God.” A
person’s timeline begins with one’s birth and ends with one’s death. Every
second that you and I experience is an opportunity given to us by God Almighty
to do a lot of good. Woe to us if we did not use it well!
