You are more than what you think you are

YOU ARE MORE THAN WHAT YOU THINK YOU ARE

Mario D’Couto

Awareness is the key factor to individual growth. Being aware of your strength and limitations is fodder for one’s wholistic development. While the above statement can be interpreted from both angles, namely, positive and negative, in this article I would like to give a positive interpretation.

Just to mention briefly, the statement “you are more than you think you are” in a negative way, can be interpreted as living ignorant of one’s limitations and acting like as though nothing is wrong. It would be worse to think that one was better than the rest when, in reality, it is just the opposite. Yet, as stated earlier, the purpose of this article is a source of upliftment or at least this is what I intend it to be.

Keeping in mind the words of William James who said, “Compared to what we ought to be, we are only half awake. We are making use of only a small part of our physical and mental resources. Stating the thing broadly, human individuals thus live far within their limits. They possess powers of various sorts which they habitually fail to use” Dr. David Schwartz in his book, “THE MAGIC OF THINKING BIG” shares one of his experiences about one of his students who underestimated himself only because he thought he was too old (he was 40 years old). The solution that Dr. Schwartz provided is enlightening. He says that a person’s productivity generally begins when he or she is 20 and ends by 70 (or even more if one is healthy and strong). That is a good 50 years which is half a century! So, the question is, what are we doing with all the time and resources we have? We are searching for all the gold and diamonds elsewhere when they are all in our backyard. Hence, do not sell yourself short. You are more than what you think you are.
