Loneliness
LONELINESS
Cl. Mario D’Couto SDB
There
are two kinds of loneliness, namely, a loneliness that comes when one cuts
himself or herself out from God and when one cuts himself or herself from the
people around him or her.
In
the early Church and during Medieval times, the faith of the Christians at that
time was strong. However, as time passed and with the coming of science and
other new discoveries, humankind began to move away from God. This is not to
say that technology in itself is bad. It is good and should be used although we
have to be prudent in the way we use it.
The
second form of loneliness is, as mentioned earlier, a consequent when a person
cuts himself or herself, from the people around him or her. There is no doubt
that we do require our moments of silence and solitude or just to be by
ourselves especially when we want to introspect and meditate or take stock of
our lives. However, if we are going to be caught up with our agenda all the
time and are not able to make the time for others, then it is only going to
lead to spiritual and emotional frustration.
From
all that is mentioned above, we see that this is nothing but an indirect
reminder of the two most important commandments, as taught to us by our good
Lord, namely, love of God and love of neighbour. Unless we are able to break
the shackles that prevent us from loving God and our neighbour, growth is not
possible.
